about

CURIOSITY is the debut E.P. from new Melbourne-based electronic duo Glass House Mountain (Benjamin Graham & James O’Brien). Graham and O’Brien were performing as the rhythm section in a psyche-rock band and discovered a joint love of electronic music. Glass House Mountain created hours of soundscapes and beats separately in their respective homes before meeting up in-person to complete and refine their work. The result is CURIOSITY, a fully-realised six-track E.P. that demonstrates the duo’s diverse range of influences from ambient, techno, pop, post-rock and jazz.

Opener Foundation sets the pace with its moody, pulsing synths and scene-setting piano which eventually give way to a jittery, rhythmic motif. The accompanying music video pays homage to the band’s hometown as it emerged from lockdown and brings to mind a mix of Godfrey Reggio’s classic film Koyaanisqatsi with modern street photography.

Track 2, Faint Young Sun, creates a wide-screen sonic vista before ending in a jazz-focused coda showcasing Glass House Mountain’s appreciation of older genres as much as 21st century knob-twiddling. Perspective I is a hypnotic, blissed-out track featuring a swirling mix of synths and acoustic instruments sitting somewhere between Mount Kimbie and Tycho. Ghost Gum, with its unusual combination of distorted harps and electronic drums smooths the way for Samples from Mars, a bright-eyed exploration of all things 80’s including fretless bass, huge tom toms and dinky synths. Perspective II closes the E.P. with a lilting, ambient waltz awash in floating guitar, textural synths and jazz drums. Its accompanying video uses old family VHS footage of the Australian bush to perfectly support the track’s strong sense of place and time.
